LW008 Leopard 1 Welded Exhaust Grilles

May be used with any Meng/Takom/Revell/Italeri Leopard 1

None of the plastic Leopard 1 grilles are very satisfactory and these grilles attempt to more accurately replicate the real thing. The slats are correctly spaced and the internal angles are correct giving the grilles more apparent depth.

Parts list:

  • Left side and right side grilles (right side has skirt mounts attached)

Fitting is different for each manufacturer (see the instruction sheet).
Be careful cutting off the casting block. It is on a sharp edge and easily damaged.

  1. Measure 40 mm forward from the rear edge of the hull and cut vertically down the hull side.
  2. Score or cut outside of the top deck hatch using the measurements in the instructions.
  3. Cut the two side skirt C-brackets from the right-side grille.
  4. After fitting side skirts, cut at correct angle and length as per drawing.

LW009 Leopard 1 Cast Exhaust Grilles

May be used with any Meng/Takom/Revell/Italeri Leopard 1

LW010 Leopard 1 Suspension Upgrade

May be used with any Meng/Revell/Italeri Leopard 1

The latest Leopard 1 kits are sadly lacking in the suspension department. These parts are not recommended for Takom as they have moulded-on components on the hull side. You will be giving yourself a lot of work.

Meng’s detail is basic, to say the least. Their shock absorbers are totally inaccurate, swing arms are very basic, return rollers are the wrong pattern, etc.

The good old old Italeri/Revell kits are better in these respects, but can still be improved on. Hopefully this set is the answer.

Fitting instructions are provided for Italeri/Revell and Meng.

The swing arms are designed to fit any of the Leopard Workshop range of wheels, or Italeri/Revell kits. The axles are too narrow for Meng and Takom wheels.

Parts list:

  • Damper large bracket/large spring x2
  • Damper large bracket/small spring x2
  • Damper small x10
  • Shock absorber right side x5
  • Shock absorber left side x5
  • Outer return roller shallow x4
  • Inner return roller deep x4
  • Swing arm x14

Fitting Italeri/Revell

  1. Drill holes directly above existing shock absorber holes (white dots). Remove collars and dimples. Fit return roller arms from kit.
  2. Trim tabs on back of damper brackets using cast on steps. Fit 1 x E, 1 x F and 5 x G, front to rear.
  3. Loosely fit shocks so cast-on arrows point upwards (5 x C on right, 5 x D on left). Push fit swing arms into stations 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 and connect with shocks. Fit arms 4 and 5 level with others.
  4. Drill out axle holes (1 mm diameter) on rear of return rollers ~ but only a little ~ do not go through! Fit rollers A, B, A, B from front to back.

Fitting Meng

  1. Use kit shock absorber as template. Drill hole through top. Place on hull side and drill 10 holes.
  2. Remove all shock absorber blocks from hull.
  3. Drill torsion bar holes out to 4 mm. Add return roller brackets from kit.
  4. Cut swing arm axle at cast-on on step to 5 mm length.
  5. Fit dampers 1 x E, 1 x F and 5 x G, front to rear. No need to trim tabs.
  6. Follow Italeri instructions 3 and 4 to complete the steps.

LW011 Leopard 1 Suspension Swing Arms

May be used with an Revell/Italeri Leopard 1.

None of the plastic Leopard 1 swing arms carry the correct detail. In fact, some of them are completely lacking in any detail at all!

These arms are designed to fit any of the Leopard Workshop range of wheels, or Italeri/Revell kits.

The axles are too narrow for Meng and Takom wheels. However, fitting instructions are included for these two manufacturers.

Parts list:

  • 14 swing arms!

Italeri/Revell fit

  1. Fit, but do not glue, kit swing arms in front and rear stations. Fit LW011 swing arms in stations 2 to 6 and glue in place using kit arms as a guide to keep them level.
  2. Remove kit arms and replace with LW011 arms.

Meng fit

  1. Drill torsion bar holes out to 4 mm.
  2. Cut swing arm axle at cast-on step to 5 mm length.
  3. Fit, but do not glue, kit swing arms in front and rear stations. Fit LW011 swing arms in stations 2 to 6 and glue in place using kit arms as a guide to keep them level.
  4. Remove kit arms and replace with LW011 arms.

Takom fit

LW012 Leopard 1 ‘Export’ Suspension

Used by Belgium, Canada, Italy, Norway

Can be used with any Meng/Revell/Italeri Leopard 1

Not recommended for Takom as they have moulded-on components on the hull side.

Parts list:

  • 2 small idlers
  • 2 hydraulic dampers/large brackets
  • 12 hydraulic dampers/small brackets

The countries above use these pattern hydraulic dampers on some of their Leopard 1s ~ Canada (C2 and C2 MEXAS, Badger AEV), Belgium (1A5BE), Italy (1A2IT and 1A5IT), Norway (1A5NO and Leguan).

The use of hydraulic dampers by Canada is somewhat random. Stocks of hydraulic dampers were used as and when the older volute spring dampers wore out, especially in Afghanistan. Odd numbers and mixes of dampers can be found in many photos of Canadian Leopard and Badger.

The other countries were more consistent. Volute dampers were replaced with hydraulic units on the first two stations of their MBTs, and on all stations of the Norwegian Leguan bridgelayer.

Belgium, Italy and Norway are known to use the smaller idler alongside the hydraulic damper.

Canada used a mix of regular or small idlers with their hydraulic dampers. Anything goes!

Belgian Leguan and Australian Leopard AS1 and ARVM have different pattern damper shields (Aussie dampers available from Mouse House).

Italeri/Revell fit

Trim tabs on back of damper brackets using cast-on steps. Fit large bracket to first station and smaller bracket to second station. Fit randomly for Canadian vehicles mixed with older volute springs from LW10 or kit parts. Cut small dust shields from 10 thou card, 3 mm wide x 4 mm deep and fit to rear only of damper units (Canadian and Italian only). See photos.

Meng fit

Drill out idler axle to 2.5 mm and trim off end of kit axle. No need to trim tabs on back of damper brackets. Then, follow above instructions.

LW013 – Leopard 2 Replacement Road Wheels and Idlers

Can be used with any Tamiya or Hobby Boss Leopard 2.

Most previous Leopard 2 road wheels in plastic have one thing in common. Not many of them have any detail on the rear face of the road wheels or idlers. This set remedies this fault.

Parts list:

  • idler front face x2
  • idler rear face x2
  • road wheel front face x14
  • road wheel rear face x14

Tamiya fitting

Straight fit with no problems.

LW013 on the left, Tamiya on the right.

Hobby Boss fitting

The road wheel axle holes need to be drilled out to 3.2 mm. The idler axle holes need to be filed out slightly.
