AIM-9x Sidewinder

The AIM Sidewinder Missile is a short-range air to air missile used throughout the armed forces in the United States and in numerous countries around the world. These are solid fuel rockets capable of reaching speeds in excess of Mach 2.5 with a range up to 22 miles.. Weighing in about 188 lbs., these missiles are 9 feet-11inches long with a 5 inch diameter.

Actual planning of the Sidewinder missile began back in 1946 but wasn’t really funded until 1951. It wouldn’t be until the Vietnam War when the Sidewinder would be pressed into service. Throughout the years, several modifications have been made to the Sidewinder; 2003 seeing the creation of the AIM-9X where Imaging Infrared Focal Plane Array (FPA) was the largest improvement. The main operational platform for the AIM-9X is the USAF F-15C and the USN F/A-18C.

The AIM-9X Sidewinder kits in both 1/72 & 1/48 scale from Attack Squadron is a cast resin and photo etch model packaged in a standard side opening box. Each box contains the following:

4 – Grey cast resin parts
2 – Clear cast resin part
1 – Phot etch sheet
1 – Decal sheet
1 – One-page instruction sheet

The Attack Squadron’s AIM-9X Sidewinder Sets, both 1/72 & 1/48, come with two cast resin missiles in the box. The missiles are made up of three main components; the body, the missile engine or booster and the missile warhead. Both the body and the engine sections are cast in grey colored resin. The molds are clean and crisp and have a fair amount of detail for the scale. The warhead section is cast in clear resin and is cleanly molded as well.

The fins, or stabilizers, are made up from photo etch parts. This is nice as it gives a more true to scale appearance with a thin sturdy material.

Along with this set is supplied a small decal sheet which there are enough markings for both sidewinders included in the set.

After taking a close look at Attack Squadron’s AIM-9X Sidewinder for Modern Jets
I found these to be quality cast, clean and crisp in the moldings. The added photo etch stabilizers are a nice touch and judging from the decal sheet, after these missiles are painted would dress up nicely for any modern build including F-15, F-16, F/A-18, F-22 and F-35 aircraft models in 1/72 or 1/48 scaling. There are two missiles to each box set and their respective price tags is reasonable for the quality and the need. I recommend these aftermarket missiles to anyone who is into building modern jets and wants to add a bit more detail to their build.

I wish to thank Attack Squadron for providing these review samples.
